The First Step To Getting A Tighter Tummy
In the all or nothing world of getting back in shape, I see a lot of people go from the couch to crushing workouts in a day without ever taking a moment to see where they are and where they are going. In this Fit By 50 project with THV-11's Tom Brannon we start with what's on the inside. How are the health markers looking such as blood pressure, triglyceride count, and cholesterol levels? In other words, does the car have gas and oil in it before we put the pedal to the metal?
Here is how we launched our Fit By 50 program -> With a trip to the doctor's office and a look at his blood work.
Here is what I hope to be motivational and educational to you at the same time.
Whatever your goal in fitness is, think of the 30 minutes in the gym as the "fitness" part of the day and the other 23 1/2 hours as the "lifestyle" part of your day. The fitness segment should include mobility work, strength work, and to get your heart pumping and your body sweating at an appropriate level. The lifestyle segment should be focused on sleep quality, stress management, hydration and nutrition.
With fitness, you should assess this based this on:
- Am I getting stronger?
- Am I moving better?
- Does my body feel better?
- Can I perform the basic human movement patterns like the squat, the lunge, the hinge and the push-up better each week?
- Am I leaning out particularly around the waistline?
Make your workouts focused around being able to say Yes to each of these questions.
With lifestyle, you should assess this based on:
- Am I sleeping better?
- Am I recovering from exercise faster?
- Do I have more energy?
- Am I keeping a consistent level of energy throughout the day?
Make your daily lifestyle focused around being able to say Yes to each of these questions.
